What changed?

Most of the changes we requested did not make it into the amended bill. In particular there were no substantial changes to protect contractors from loopholes related to non-renewal of contracts or to require employers to use the dispute resolution process if a contractor requests it. At this stage, it’s unlikely we will get some of these much needed issues resolved and a plausible fix is just to ask that we are removed from the bill entirely. If we are removed from the bill, all contractors in video games would revert to normal non-Hobbit law contract law and would have the same rights as other contractors in other industries (including the ability to contest their employment status).

What happens now?

The bill will soon be presented back to Parliament for its Second Reading. At this stage the bill will likely be approved to continue the process and some or all of the amendments may be adopted.

Shortly after that, the bill will move to the next stage, the Committee of the Whole House. This is our last chance to change the bill before it becomes law. During this stage any MP can request a vote on an amendment to the bill. The Hon Andrew Little is the MP in Charge of the bill and would normally introduce amendments at this stage, so we need to let him know soon how we want the bill to change.

It’s unlikely we will get significant structural changes made to the bill at this point, so our most plausible fix is to remove ourselves from the bill if we feel that the downsides are too high. You can use the buttons at the top of this page to request that games be removed from the bill or to request some specific changes if you think there is a better fix.
